“Jehovah is my Comforter.” This was the official motto of King Charles IX of Sweden. It was written in Latin: “Iehovah solatium meum.” Charles IX belonged to one of several generations of Swedish monarchs who reigned from 1560 to 1697 and used God’s name in Hebrew or Latin inscriptions on coins, medals, and coats of arms. Charles IX also founded the Royal Order of Jehovah. On the day of his coronation in 1607, Charles IX wore the so-called Jehovah Chain around his neck.

There is considerable evidence that in the 16th and 17th centuries, in various parts of Europe, the name Jehovah was frequently used in inscriptions on coins and medals, as well as in the decoration of public buildings and churches. Apparently, in those times, God’s words recorded in Exodus 3:15 (NASB) were held in high regard: “Jehovah… This is My name forever.”
